Every year, I travel to New York City to photograph Teachers College, Columbia University’s Long-Term Employee Recognition ceremony, and this year marked my fifth time capturing the event. The celebration honored faculty and staff who have dedicated anywhere from 10 to 40 years to the college, and I was grateful to once again cover the event on my own. Here is some of what I captured.

I was asked to return to TC to photograph a ceremony in June that was halted by COVID-19 for two years - their Staff Recognition Ceremony. It was a 2-day celebration of faculty and staff who have been at the college for anywhere from 10 to 55+ years. I photographed this event on my own and was glad to be called in for this project. I had a great time covering the event. Here is some of what I captured.

On this day, I had the opportunity to second-shoot a traditional Bosnian wedding. Although it had familiar elements I’d seen before of a wedding ceremony, there were several traditions I had never seen before. One of which was their tradition to give servers (their own family members) large amounts of money for coffee.

I was contracted recently to photograph a charity event for the Fred Astaire Dance Studio in Winter Park, FL. Dance for Heroes - a charitable event to benefit Revived Soldiers Ukraine. That night, the studio was holding a fundraiser for an organization in Ukraine that helps rehabilitate soldiers wounded while on duty.

My cousin and her husband just moved back to Florida from Georgia. They are both engineers and move cities/states just about every few years to be closer to each of their project’s sites. They are now working on a project in Florida and called me up for some family photos. They take some each year for their Christmas cards and to have a record of how the kids have grown throughout the years. I happily obliged!

3 Things I've Learned in 5 Years as a Photographer / July 27, 2018 by Christian Hernandez

I started taking my photography seriously in 2013 after moving to New York City. There, I did a lot of portrait and event work at the graduate school I attended, and also roamed NYC photographing the city on my own. That's the time when I began learning the ins and outs of my camera and how to photograph. Between then and now, I've learned a lot.
