Photographing Teachers College, Columbia University's New Student Orientation - 2018 / by Christian Hernandez

I attended Teachers College, Columbia University in New York City both as a full-time and part-time student from 2013-2017. I graduated with 2 Masters degrees specializing in Mental Health Counseling. During my time at the college, I worked as a Student Assistant for the Office of Student Affairs, where I did some photography and graphic design work. That office was one of the influencing factors that pushed me to start my photography journey. They asked me to photograph several events while working there. I didn't know much about photography, but taking on these tasks and photographing these events now gave me the push to learn my way through a camera.

Throughout the years, I photographed orientations and gatherings, portraits, photobooth events, and ceremonies. I was the go-to guy for photography around the campus and had a lot of fun doing it.

The orientation is a large production with a lot of moving parts, involving many departments, several locations, and about 900 new students. I photographed the check-in process, seating, keynote speakers, lunch, the resource fair, several talks, and overall details.

Fast forward a bit and I move to Orlando in the Summer of 2018. The college still needed a photographer for their September orientation, so they asked me due to my relationship with the office and the quality of my work. I gladly said yes! I boarded a plane and headed to NYC once again and to Teachers College to continue serving the amazing people at the Office of Student Activities and my alma mater.

In my previous post about photographing TC’s orientation in 2016, I had little experience photographing large events. By September 2018, I had a lot more experience and I can tell that the quality of images improved because I knew how to work my way around the camera and lighting much better than 2 years prior.

Here's some of what I captured.
